Week 1 Recap
Week 1 is now officially in the books. Personally, the week can be summed up in the immortal words of Yogi Berra:
"It's déjà vu all over again."
Week 1 Results
Congrats to Sal, Erik, and Panda for their wins last week. Erik and Panda are currently in first place. I was the only player with both a correct pick and a loss--and thus what was old is new again (super not bitter by getting destroyed by my own team).
Schedule Page Update
The Week 2 matchups are as follows:
Raymond vs. Panda
Erik vs. Emilio
Simon vs. Marques
I've decided to go away from using the tockify widget to display the schedule--mainly due to time and the fact that tockify has a small monthly fee now. Instead, I've embedded a crude google sheet which should be good enough for our purposes. I might tweak it later, but at least the matchups are now visible through the site.
You'll probably notice that the first seven weeks have the same exact matchups as the last seven weeks. This kind of clarity is obvious in retrospect, but not in the like two weeks that I slapped the original site together. But it also shows why I think eight is the ideal number for the league--everyone plays everyone exactly twice. So what was initially an anomaly became a feature, and I've rolled with it since.
Standings Page Updated
The standings page has been updated. I'll try to update the page by Tuesday every week--but the back-end maintenance is a little tougher this year in terms of matching up the spreads to confirm results of each game. Since I had to re-write the scraper to grab the spreads, the behavior is slightly different from last year, and I have to combine about 5 spreadsheets to get it all to work. There's definitely a more efficient way to get it done, but that's probably an off-season tweak.
Picks Page
This year the picks page will be live at 1130 every Tuesday. I feel this makes the most sense and gives the least competitive advantage to those of us who may not actually sleep (maybe I'm alone in that regard, lol).
The scraper for the picks page is still a little buggy. If the spread does not properly load by noon, feel free to go to https://www.oddsshark.com/nfl/scores. I believe there is code actively blocking automated scrapers which is wreaking havoc on the backend setup. Not a deal-breaker, just annoying.
Conclusion
It's been a great start to the year y'all. Let's keep it rolling.
